About Allen Insurance and Financial

What makes this program so special for mariners?
The US SAILING health insurance program provides worldwide coverage and includes AD&D (accident death and dismemberment), medical evacuation and bedside visitation coverages as well as all other health insurance coverage expected in the U.S. In addition, the program includes mPassport, a portable medical care access tool for use worldwide.

Will the US SAILING health insurance program cover the same mandates as other U.S. policies?
Yes. This program adheres to all U.S. federal and state reform mandates and will adjust to all reform mandate dates whenever they change.

How can I enroll?
Any US SAILING member can enroll in this program two months before the start date of the policy. This is called the Open Enrollment period. After Open Enrollment, enrollment is closed unless the US SAILING member has a qualifying event. The next open enrollment period will be July, August and September 2011, for a September 1, 2011 start date.

What is a qualifying event?
Benefit plans can be affected by life event changes, some of which qualify as an official change in status by the IRS. Generally, when you enroll in benefits as a new employee, you cannot make any changes until the next Open Enrollment period. However, if you experience a qualified change in status you can make mid-year changes. Some examples of changes that you may make include: Change the number of people covered under your plans; enroll in or discontinue your coverage and begin a new or change an existing Medical or Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account.
A qualifying event, also called a life event change, is a personal change in status which may allow you to change your benefit elections.
Examples of some qualifying events include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Change in legal marital status – marriage, divorce, legal separation, annulment, or death of a spouse.
2. Change in number of dependents – birth, death, adoption, placement for adoption, award of legal guardianship.
3. Change in employment status of the employee’s spouse or employee’s dependent – switching from part-time to full-time employment status or from full-time to part-time, termination or commencement of employment, a strike or lockout, commencement of or return from an unpaid leave of absence which results in employee/dependent becoming ineligible for coverage.
4. Dependent satisfies or ceases to satisfy eligibility requirement – marriage of a dependent or change in student status.

How do I enroll if I have a qualifying event?
It is important to remember that if you experience a qualifying event, you will need to request a change to your benefits within 30 calendar days of the event and provide required documentation. If you do not request the change within 30 calendar days, the next opportunity you will have to make changes to your benefits will be during the next Open Enrollment period.  This can be handled through Rick Bagnall at Allen Insurance and Financial.

Can I enroll online?
Online enrollment is available only during the Open Enrollment. To enroll at other times, contact Allen Insurance and Financial for assistance.
